AN AMERICAN PICNIC
An American Tradition

We Americans traditionally relish the adventure of eating outdoors, especially in Florida where an abundance of sunshine allows plenty of time to pack a picnic basket and head for the great outdoors. Picnics are personal. We are particular about the foods we serve, and who we dine with especially when preparing for a picnic. What we eat depends upon who we are. As true with most holiday meals, such as the traditional July 4th picnic, family favorites are on the top of our list.
An American picnic can consist of "traditional American favorites" served on a blanket on the beach, or in the park, or simply in our own backyard. From cold fried chicken and potato salad, to a simple peanut butter sandwich and chips from a brown paper bag, eaten outdoors on a hot summer day, can bring back wonderful memories for some. How exciting it was as a kid to pack up a basket of goodies and head to the nearest picnic area with family and friends!
Back in the day, automobile lunches and motor picnics were very popular and picnics were even enjoyed "on the road." What makes a picnic so special isn’t just the food, it’s the tradition behind it --and traditional it is. Picnics can be dated back to medieval hunting feasts and hunting conventions in France and England but picnics, as we know them today, date to the middle of the 19th century. Although a European concept, people from all over the world have their own concepts, but for American’s, it is as American as apple pie. It is especially true on the 4th of July and other summer holidays. So, grab your basket and stuff it full of your family favorites, or create your own favorite picnic menu. Head to the beach, the park, your boat or backyard --and appreciate the simplicity, the history and the enjoyment of this long time tradition.
